Digitizing Your Photographs
By Bonnie Sorensen

Introduction

Digitizing your collection of photos has many advantages and uses in these days of advancing technology. Not only does it help assure that your precious memories are preserved, it gives you a peace of mind knowing that should something happen to your original photographs, there is still a digital backup copy available to you.

Since technology advancements have exploded in the past few years, many are left overwhelmed, not knowing where to begin or how to take advantage of what is now available to them. If you have a large collection of photographs, digitizing them can be a huge undertaking and it can be easy to get overwhelmed. Don't panic. Read through the articles found on this site, especially the article on Preserving Your Photographic Heritage, come up with a plan and take it one step at a time.

One of my mottos is "Do it once, do it right." It's a big enough project to digitize photos once, but it's even a huger project to have to do them twice because you later find that you didn't digitize them correctly the first time. Make sure you know what you are doing and have a plan before you even start.

In these next few articles I will address some of the important steps that should be taken to assure that your collection of photographs, negatives and slides are properly digitized (scanned into the computer), restored and digitally preserved.
